Lövåsa Lake is a lake fed by springs with a special history. Big parts of the lake are covered by overgrown turf, which moves along with the wind. They are about 1, 5-2 meters thick and are therefore strong enough to walk on. There was a great drought in the years 1867-69 and so they decided to cover the lake in order to get more arable land. They built a 200 meter long canal in able to lead away the water. During the next 60 years the farms around cut their hay down by the shore meadows but in 1929 they tired and wanted their old lake back. They filled the canal and planted in new fish. When the canal closed big divots, turfs floated in and landed on the surface. It is these turfs that we can see today. These turfs create a favorable environment for birds such as cranes which can be seen there.
